Abbreviations keep patterns concise and easy to scan. They include acronyms, initialisms, shortened words, and contractions.

How do I format abbreviations in a crochet pattern?

List all standard abbreviations before the pattern instructions begin. This helps makers reference any unfamiliar terms quickly.

  • Spell out the full term the first time it appears, with the abbreviation in parentheses
  • Example: “Single crochet (sc)” then use sc throughout
