Gauge

Author: Crochetly · Last updated: May 16, 2026

Gauge is the number of stitches and rows per inch or per 4 inches, measured in a swatch. UK crocheters call this tension.

Gauge tells you how many stitches and rows fit into a specific measurement. It determines whether your finished project matches the expected size.

Always state both swatch dimensions and stitch counts.

Example:

Gauge: 14 sts x 16 rows = 4" x 4" in dc

See gauge and tension for more information.

If your gauge doesn’t match the pattern’s, your project will come out the wrong size. A garment that should be 40 inches around might end up 36 inches or 44.
